My daily focus is still the preserved citrus cookbook, but it’s newsletter weekend and cookie party weekend so let’s spend a few moments together. You’re receiving this on the 7th night of Hanukkah. Hope you’ve found the light hopeful during what was a tough and dark week all around the world.
A very special cookie party
This annual gathering brings together a crowd of cookie loving adults to honor a dear friend’s mom who used to make cookie boxes for us every year. Now we recreate those boxes (that she used to make alone), as a large group and leave the party with a facsimile of what she created years ago. I hope you’ll read more about my favorite baker Hermine in this essay on my blog.

An old favorite: thumbprint cookies
This is a simple and classic thumbprint cookie that Hermine included in her boxes every year. Make it your own by switching up the spices, nuts and fillings. Easy and delicious.
Happy comments about donuts!
I know I posted this sufganiyot recipe in the last newsletter but I just had to share these two comments I received about making them and hope you might just make it a last minute project this weekend!
“I just made 4 batches for an event for the Jewish Food Lab at Wilshire Boulevard Temple and they were perfect. Every single donut got eaten. Thank you Beth for a fantastically perfect recipe!”
AND
“I made them with my 11 year old son! Was super easy for him to follow, we baked them, he insisted on making Nutella ones too lol. But they turned out great, thanks so much.”
Another happy comment plus soup!
If the short cold days make you crave soup, this barley mushroom soup is a winner. Make it vegetarian, even vegan or beef it up with flanken ribs like my grandma did.
This comment came in this week and made me so happy to know I helped someone else delve up happy memories from her Oma’s kitchen:
“Hi Beth! … I was searching for “Hanukkah risotto dishes” (don’t ask, lol) which led me circuitously to your beautiful recipe! My Oma made a very similar soup but with something she called Grünekörn. … I’m so glad I found you! … Thanks for the sweet nostalgia!”
