Last year at this time I was in New York City accepting an IACP award for my Instagram account. This year I am about to hunker down to the arduous but incredible process of writing my second cookbook. But first, I’m going to blintz out, get excited about pumpkin spice (stay with me) and share the beauty of harvesting my pomegranate tree.
Blintz out with me!
My favorite food this time of year are cheese blintzes. I love making them or if I’m really lucky, eating them at my friend Sharon’s house. She taught me everything I know about preparing this ultimate comfort food. I’ve shared all of our tips and tricks in this cheese blintz post and remember - make a lot because these freeze so well!
The perfect blintz topper
There are some pretty talented jam makers in our blintz-eating community but when I bring this strawberry raspberry jam to break-the-fast on Yom Kippur, it’s always the first to go. Created in memory of my late son, it is absolutely the best jam I have ever made - said by many besides the author of this newsletter 😉.
Roast your fruit!
While we are in this shoulder season of fruit - the apples are coming in but the figs and grapes are still hanging out, make this luscious roasted fruit recipe. Use this instead of jam on your blintzes or just serve it for dessert with ice cream or for breakfast with yogurt.
Pomegranate season is here!
Pomegranates have been all over the farmers’ markets but my tree is just starting to tell me it’s time to harvest. They are really looking like jewels on the outside and hopefully inside when I harvest the first one and check. To celebrate the season, I’m teaching an all pomegranate class at The Civic Kitchen in San Francisco - from fresh pomegranates to pomegranate molasses, we’ll be cooking a whole feast to enjoy together at the end of class. Only 4 spots left already!
The perfect fall pancake
I’m not a big pumpkin spice latte fan but I do love the warming spices of the pumpkin spice blend. When I used to make pancakes every Sunday morning, in the fall I’d play with seasonal flavors and these pumpkin spice pancakes were born.
Beth’s favorite sound bites right now:
This homemade hot fudge sauce cuz when isn’t hot fudge and ice cream a good thing?!!
The latest on Sumac & Sunshine - pistachios!
In case it’s still hot where you are, a post about fall recipes for hot weather!
