Woohoo - my second newsletter on this platform. Hope the transition was easy for you - my much appreciated subscribers!
Yesterday was the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. As fraught as the world news is, I’m trying to find the daily little joys - it’s what keeps me afloat. Summer fruit is one of them. Gardening is another. What’s your favorite food or activity that really makes it feel like summer to you and sparks a little moment of joy? Here are a few of my favorite summer foods:
Fruit crisps!
If anything makes us think it’s summer, it’s a warm fruit crisp with vanilla ice cream dolloped on top. I haven’t made one yet this year - what???!!!! - but maybe this weekend.
All the cherries 🍒
Nothing makes me much happier than a big bowl of cherries from my favorite local fruit grower, Andy’s Orchard. Today while you are reading this I might be attending a u-pick event there and buying way too many of my favorite Bings and Black Tartarians. If so, this will be the first recipe I make — cherry pie filling! Then I’ll either make mini pies, a big pie or just dollop it on my yogurt or ice cream.
Most popular post on my blog is …
Apricot preserves! Andy’s Orchard apricots are not ready yet but they will be soon. Then I always make jam so I can savor their flavor year round. Also, like cherries, we just eat them as is to savor that special flavor. Our two favorite kinds are Blenheims and Bonny Royal. Yes each type of apricot has a different flavor and it’s so special!

These are some of my favorite summer foods - what are yours?

Oh I love cherries!! Living in the PNW, local cherries start showing up at the farmers markets in July and I can’t wait. You’ve inspired me and now I need a cherry crisp. ☺️ Love your recipes Beth!
This Michigander is now craving cherries!!! Those cherry pies sound wonderful!
